BS5839 states “periodic inspection and test” should be carried out by a competent fire alarm contractor at periods of no longer than six months and that periodic service records are kept.

The Fire Safety Regulatory Reform Order of which came into effect on the 1st October 2006 has consolidated the requirements of existing fire regulations including “Fire Precautions Act 1971” and “Fire Precautions (Workplace) Amendment Regulations 1999” into one piece of legislation requiring a “responsible person or persons” to implement a fire risk assessment of the premises focusing on the safety of all relevant persons with the aim of avoiding fires, mitigating their effect and ensuring that a safe escape is available in case of fire.
